ObjectDataSource SOA Style

So here's the scenario. After really digging your teeth into ASP.NET 2.0 and playing around wiih all the cool data access features, you decide to apply a liberal use of the ObjectDataSource for its ability to take care of the paging and sorting calls for you. Now, you begin to convert your site to a service oriented back end and you wonder how you're going to make calls against your web service. You have a few options in front of you. You can create a thin facade layer that will act as a liaison between your presentation code and your service layer calls, and hook your ObjectDataSource to that. This works especially well when you have a complex object model that makes use of the web service calls behind the scenes. It's also beneficial when you are generating your proxy classes from metadata or contacting a foreign web service.

Installing DotNetNuke 4.8.2 on a Remote Host

In previous articles on this site I have provided tutorials for installing DotNetNuke to a local machine, however, I typically avoid the topic of installing DotNetNuke to a remote web hosting provider. I have been asked many times why and the answer is simple; installations to remote hosts are not standardized, depending on the hosting providers environments the steps to install can differ greatly. However, due to popular demand I have created this tutorial which will provide you the basic overview of how to perform a clean installation of DotNetNuke on a remote web hosting provider. In the article I will try to point out the most common differences between different hosting providers, I will also be providing specific examples regarding the use of the Plesk control panel which is what my hosting provider (3Essentials) uses.

ASP.NET MVC Application Building: Forums #1 - Create the Perfect App

n this series of blog entries, I build an entire ASP.NET MVC Forums application from start to finish. The goal is to discover and promote best-practices for building applications with the ASP.NET MVC framework.

In this first entry, I discuss the overall goals for the forums application. I discuss the importance of avoiding code smells and how software design principles and patterns can help you write code that is resilient to future change. I also justify my choice to use test-driven development while building the Forums application.

Membership Administration with MVC Preview 5

Last weekend I posted a release of the MVC Membership Starter Kit that targets Preview 5 of the ASP.Net MVC framework. There was no packaged release targeting Preview 4 (though if you downloaded the latest source, it worked), so this release essentially packages the changes from both previews.

Web Deployment Project for Visual Studio 2005 and 2008

Deployment of ASP.Net sites can be done through Copy Website and Publish Website feature of Visual Studio. Using Copy Website, we can copy the compiled version of the asp.net site to the target virtual directory location. These features does not have option for fixed assembly naming, lacks in post build option, can't modify configuration settings during build and etc. Thus, it lacks in some flexibility we require for deploying webapplications. At times, we might require providing some build actions, making single output assembly where the Publish option does not help in these scenarios. As an answer to the above difficulty, Microsoft developed a plug-in that has the entire features which we require for deploying web applications called Web Deployment Plugin.

If you don't know by now you can reset your web applications and or web sites with a simple change to the web.config. For example you can FTP(if remote or hosted) to your server and edit the web.config by adding a space or removing a space. Basically you want the application your using editing with think something has changed since you touched the document. Save the form after this has happened and IIS will recycle the application / web site.

Creating ActionFilters in ASP.NET 3.5

ASP.NET MVC Applications contains the action methods in the controllers. These actions are mapped through the routing when a user makes a browser request. In order to execute your logic before a action method is called or after an action method runs. ASP.NET MVC support this requirement through a concept called ActionFilters.

How to view information in ViewState using ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5

ViewState is a Base64 encoded string and is not readable by the human eye. However it is also not difficult to decode the viewstate and view the contents of the viewstate when it is passed over the wire. In this article we will see how to decode and view the contents of a viewstate.

Scott Hanselman's Computer Zen - A tale of two techniques: The [Thread

Apparantly - according to The Hanselman: "the [ThreadStatic] attribute is only useful when YOU control the ThreadPool (and the lifecycle of the threads). It also reminds one to think about variable scope/lifetime especially in the context of ASP.NET."
