Easily enable databindings on a ToolStripButton

I was developping an application lately and I needed to bind the "Enabled" property of a ToolStripButton to my Presenter. I failed to find any "DataSource" or "DataBindings" property. I then decided to make my own button without reinventing the wheel to enable this capability.

We just finished the final iteration for this and went gold. Although this post has more marketing then I would normally post here, I at least wanted to let fellow Linq fanatics that our 'semi-secret' project with a few companies you might know has at least for now reached a milestone. And who could announce a new product without Silverlight (grin).. No seriously we love it. WPF was not all that compelling and XAML didn't look like much fun until we got our killer app in Silverlight. We even wrote a Linq version of the 'scribbler' code the deep zoom team posted if anyone would like it. Anyway, lots of good technical material will follow. We learned a lot and continue to learn a lot from dissecting the Linq to NHibernate project. What makes this work so fun is it demands optimization across different vendor web services. We do a kind of 'query optimizer' to decide how to fan out requests where we know the general characteristics of say 'asset classes' as data series vs. say a large list of equities.

Creating a transparent Panel in .NET

Today I wanted to create a transparent Panel-Control in .NET in order to superimpose it on the WebBrowser Control in order to record click events. The goal was to code a simple macro recorder for websites. Unfortunatelly the .NET framework does not allow (in an easy way) to make a control fully transparent. So it was back to the good ol' winuser.h and the extended window styles. Namely 0x00000020L or as it is better known WS_EX_TRANSPARENT.

One of the coolest new features in .NET 2.0 is the introduction of Generics. For those of you that have been creating tons of strongly typed collections for your business objects I'm sure you had the same reaction I did when you heard about them. "Sweet!! Now I can stop generating and tweaking derived collection classes all over the place!!" (This is assuming you've all been using some sort of refactoring tool that can generate the collection classes for you, I hope you have.) OK, so now we know we can create strongly typed collections in our code. You might be wondering why I'm suggesting we still create a separate collection class and not just use the generic collections included in the System.Collections.Generic namespace. The idea is that we can create our own collections that support generics that provide us with specific needs that we might commonly use or need for a specific application. In this article I will present a simple collection class which both supports Generics as well as Sorting.
