UpdatePanel and Sys.Application.add_load Woes

The ScriptManager usually puts calls to Sys.Application.initialize at the end of a page, right before the ending form tag. For custom composite controls, however, this call can come before the script has been output for your custom control. If you try to use the ScriptManager to initialize your control, it won't initialize in Firefox 3, Opera 9, or Safari 3. Here's how you can work around it.

Never worry about ASP.NET AJAX's "d" again

Since a lot of people are having trouble with it, I want to share one method you can use to completely isolate your code from the ".d" problem. In this post, I will show you how to detect the ".d" and how you can completely isolate your $.ajax success handler from it.

ASP.NET Ajax - Script Combining and moving ScriptResource.axd's to Sta

I've got a little something I'm doing and I wanted to take control over some scripts that were being added by ASP.NET WebForms. Remember that ASP.NET WebForms is designed around a control/component model, so you don't get 100% control over your markup. When you drag a control onto the page in WebForms, you expect it to work.

Rebuilding The Google Blog Bar; jQuery-ed Version

A 4KB jQuery plugin instead of 118KB Google Blog Bar!!

I have shown before how to use Google Blog Bar as related posts widget, But when I actually tried to use it on my site, I didn't like all these JavaScript/CSS files that I've to include.
And since I already use jQuery -and who doesn't- I decided to rebuild the Blog Bar from scratch.

run jQuery code from ASP.NET Server-Side

The post is the example of an approach: how you would run some jQuery code from ASP.NET code-behind (server-side).
If there is a ScriptManager on the page and the request was Asynchronous, then the JavaScript code needs to be registered with ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock. If the request is just a simple standard Postback, registering the JavaScript with Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock is the solution.

Creating a quick and dirty jQuery contentEditable Plugin

Inline editing content is a feature that's novel and highly useful at the same time. I've been using it in a number of admin interfaces to provide very easy and quick text updates to existing content. There are a number of ways to accomplish this but in this post I'll discuss a contentEditable jQuery plugin that makes any content inline editable using the DOM's contentEditable attribute that maintains text formatting in the editable text.

How To: Clean Up ASP.NET JavaScript Tags

In April of '08, I wrote a post about cleaning up the ASP.NET head tag using control adapters. I've got some great feedback from it, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one that is horrified when looking at the source of an ASP.NET rendered web page. From the comments of that article I was recently asked how to clean up JavaScript tags.

How I handle JSON dates returned by ASP.NET AJAX

The problem of how to handle dates in JSON is one of the more troublesome issues that may arise when directly calling ASP.NET AJAX web services and page methods.. Since the question of how I handle this problem is something asked often in emails and in comments on other posts here, I want to address the topic with its own post.

Add url to the Description of a SharePoint Column

If you want to add a url to the Description of a SharePoint Column, this cannot be done by adding HTML tags in the Description field of the Additional Column Settings of a SharePoint Column. HTML tags added in the Description of a column are rendered in plain text, so that is not an option.

You could achieve this though by use of the Content Editor Web Part and some JavaScript.

In next example, I have create an Issue Tracking SharePoint List. In this list, I have a Lookup column called Contact, which points to a Contacts SharePoint List, located in the same site, and at the same level as my Issue Tracking List. I want to add a hyperlink in the description of my Contact Lookup column of my Issue Tracking list to the NewForm.aspx page of my Contacts list to make it more user-friendly for end-users to find where they can add values for that Lookup column.

I just checked in an initial prototype of a reusable Virtual Earth component for ASP.NET MVC. The "VEToolkit.Web.MVC.Map" component is written as an Extension to the ASP.NET MVC AjaxHelper class, and allows for a simpler experience when implementing Virtual Earth mapping within ASP.NET MVC applications.
Hercules Resource Linker for Javascripts, Images and stylesheets

I wrote this tool to assist in including style sheets, java scripts and image resources into web applications. It has the following features:

    * Gives a unified strongly typed way to access your resources and include them in your project.
    * Generates appropriate HTML include tags for whatever resource you are including (java script, style sheet, image)
    * It does not matter in what level of your website hierarchy you include your resource, the path will always point to the correct location.
    * Will make sure that you do not include your java script and your style sheet resources more than once. (As long as you are not including any manually by writing your include HTML tags yourself)
    * Supports the use of configurable packages to include a set of resources at once.

Resize Complete event for JQuery

Opera, Safari, IE and Firefox all have different behaviors when the resize event is fired. To fix this I wrote a resizeComplete event plugin for JQuery to allow you to handle once resizing is finished.
