Starting with jQuery

This is the first of number of posts to come on getting started with jQuery with no previous knowledge of the framework. Over the course, various jQuery Plug-Ins will be used and discussed along with gradual integration with traditional ASP.Net 2.0 web applications components (i.e. Master Pages, User Controls, and ASP.Net AJAX).

Dynamically create ASP.NET UserControl using JQuery & Ajax Web Service

Few thing you need to consider when you are accesing ASP.NET webservice through JQuery.

    * Request verb Type
    * Content- length with IIS6+
    * Default contentType
    * JSON object formatting
    * Maximum length exceed exception

I am explaining these issues and workaround to make JQuery work fine with ASP.NET Ajax enabled web service.

Dynamically create ASP.NET user control using Ajax and Web Service

To make web UI dynamic and more responsive to the various situations and modes, several techniques are used by the developers like making irrelevant controls invisible, disabling unused controls. This technique makes you page complex and heavy in size. Dynamic user control is another story. With dynamic control creation you will get the unmatched flexibility and innovation with robustness. Using this technique you can add any usercontrol to any page as per demand without postback or update panel.

Web developers. You suck.

Well, JavaScript developers, specifically. In order to aid in development of my own websites, I enabled JavaScript debugging in Internet Explorer a few weeks back. To my horror, I have quickly experienced what seems to be complete disregard for serving syntactically correct JavaScript on the open internet. No, I'm not just talking about a few niche websites, run by amateur programmers. I am talking about industry-leading nerd-friendly powerhouse websites that should know better.

Build a Web Chat Application using ASP.Net 3.5, LINQ and AJAX (in C# 3

Introduction:

A Java Programmer friend of mine once asked me if I have ever built a web chat application. I said "No". He then asked me if I were to build a really simple, monitored, bare minimum, working web chat application, how long do I think will it take (something to that effect). I said, "I don't know". A few days had passed, one lazy evening, I was surfing the web looking for ASP.Net web chat applications. It seems that I can't find one that is simple enough to implement. So I decided to just build something simple from scratch. When I say simple, that just means that: I'm am going to try to build this web chat as fast as possible, with very minimal planning or architecturing.

How do you deal with JavaScript inclusion into the page given that you have a fair number of JavaScript files that are bound to change frequently and across multiple projects/applications?

AJAX and Javascript Libraries for .net

A good starting resource on where to begin to look for when it comes to ajax/javascript libraries. I really like how factors in documentation and ease of use. Some tools and libraries are really powerful, but it is tough to implement in a work environment in a timely and effective manner.

jQuery for Asp.net MVC preview 3

So, I finally got a chance to sit down and finish up the jQuery for Asp.net Mvc preview 3. If you haven't already read Scott's post about preview 3, you should definitely do so before reading this one.

So, quite some things have changed in preview 3, which made me decide to change a lot in the jQuery for Asp.net mvc (jqmvc) too. To start with most radical one: I ditched the ajax.master. This little 'framework' does not rely on a special masterpage in your website from now on. Since things have radically changed, I'll start all over again on how to use this project.

Encoding Latitude and Longitude pairs for performance

In Virtual Earth we use lat/lon pairs everywhere, for pushpins, polylines and polygons but also for map bounds like the current view. This article aims to look at a better way to store and transmit these values. The encoding algorithm used is from Google maps. You will find an explanation of how and why we use it for Virtual Earth.

Silverlight and JavaScript Interop Basics

I've been looking into Silverlight in my spare time a bit, to see what it has to offer, and the JavaScript "Interop" is actually pretty neat and simple to use. About three months ago I wrote a post titled "Working with HTML DOM in Silverlight using the Bridge Pattern"; so I think this time I'll go over some of the basics involved with communicating back and forth between Silverlight and JavaScript.
