Make Visual Studio Generate Your Repository

As many of you may know, I've been goofing around with Code Generation again with SubSonic's new MVC Addin. One of the things I really wanted to try and flex is Visual Studio 2008's code generation bits - T4. Not many people know it even exists, and to me it's one of the Great Hidden Secrets of Visual Studio 2008.

Linq to SQL with WCF in a Multi Tiered Environment - Part 1

In many places, forums, blogs, or techy talks with some colleagues I hear some ongoing urban legends about Linq to SQL I came across:

    *

You can not implement multi tiered applications with Linq to SQL
    *

Linq to SQL can not be used for enterprise level applications

I can't say that both of these statements are particularly wrong or right, of course Linq to SQL can not handle every scenario but in fairness it handles most of the scenarios sometimes even better than some other RAD oriented ORM s. In this post I will create a simulation of an enterprise web application, having its Data Access, Services, and Presentation Layers separated and let them communicate with each other (err.., at least from service to UI) through WCF - Windows Communication Foundation.

Team City Continuous Integration Build Server & VS.NET VCS Integration

Starting a new project always requires a certain amount of setup, one of the primary goals of any development group these days should be continuous integration. This is something that is not expensive or time consuming to setup. Recently for a grand price of about zero dollars (except for my regular pay, so I suppose not truly zero dollars) I setup Team City, started a build process going, and got back to coding and research on next steps all within about 3-4 hours. Mind you, two of those hours was stuck on a dumb problem because I "clicked" the wrong option in a drop down box.

ASP.NET MVC Preview 3 Release

From ScottGu's weblog - "This morning we released the Preview 3 build of the ASP.NET MVC framework. I blogged details last month about an interim source release we did that included many of the changes with this Preview 3 release. Today's build includes some additional features not in last month's drop, some nice enhancements/refinements, as well as Visual Studio tool integration and documentation."

Envy Code R coding font update released

Latest version of my monospaced scalable progamming font now with 550 glyphs over man codepages, bold, italics and extensive hinting for that crisp-clear experience and distinguishable characters.

Also includes a special hack to let you get italic syntax highlighting within Visual Studio!
