Working with .NET 1.1 in Visual Studio 2008 and Team Server

I was trying to write that post for so long that I've started worry that there will be new version of the Visual Studio before I will even start. Finally, I found some time and here it is.

What I'm going to write about here is how to use the latest IDE to work with a .NET 1.1 applications. Before you will start asking why one would like to do so, there is an answer: because you can. But seriously speaking, I prefer to use much more matured IDE than the very 2003 version. There is also other, even more important reason - TFS. By importing your 1.1 projects into VS2008 you can use full benefits of TFS. That is worthwhile. So let's get started.

Disabling Configuration Inheritance For ASP.NET Child Applications

Configuration inheritance is a very robust feature of ASP.NET that allows you to set configuration settings in the Web.Config of a parent application and have it automatically be applied to all of its child applications. There are certain situations, however, when there are configuration settings that you don't want to apply to a child application. The usual course of action is to override the setting in question in the child application's web.config file, which is ideal if there are only a handful of settings to deal with. This is less than ideal when there are a significant number of settings that need to be overridden, or when you simply want the child application to be largely independent of its parent.

Creating a PHP 5 Extension with Visual C++ 2005

This article describes the steps to create a custom PHP extension DLL for the Windows platform. The Zend API documentation that comes with PHP 5 on Windows (see php_manual_en.chm) does a good job explaining how to write extension methods, parse method parameters, and return values. But there is not currently a good step-by-step tutorial on how to get your first extension project up and running on Windows. The aim of this article is to fill that gap.

ASP.NET Charting with NPlot

There are several commercial charting libraries available for ASP.NET. They are extensively advertised, and can certainly do the job. However, frugal developers like me may prefer freeware alternatives. In this article we will examine using NPlot to create charts in an ASP.NET application. NPlot is a free, .NET native charting engine that excels at scientific charting. Read on to learn more!

Good bye NUnit.Behave hello Behave#

Most of you who read my blog know that I have been working on NUnit.Behave which was meant to mirror the functionality of rbehave in .Net. My initial spike was a success but it required that you inherit from an base NUnit Test Fixture. Even I wouldn't use it! So I spent some time decoupling it from NUnit into it's own framework. At the same time my idea caught on and Jimmy Bogard decided to do the same thing. Well to make a long story short we have been collaborating on the differences between our two frameworks over the last week and have decided to go with Behave#. I love OSS, where else could this be possible!
