Fast Serialization

We use ALOT of serialization in the current system I work with. Serializing/deserializing 100,000,000 objects in a day is pretty common. For a long time we knew that the binary formatter was fat and slow but never rationalized writing something custom as we were always fast enough. Unfortunately our data throughput has raised 400% in the last year (when you start with gigs and gigs of messages this is a huge gain) and our little three or four year old dual xeon 2.2 has turned into the little engine that could during peaks lately so we finally bit the big one and threw something together quickly.

Have you heard of SFD?

OK, you've heard of TDD and BDD, but have you heard of SFD? SFD stands for Simple-First Development. It's a principle that we're driving on as we move forward in our "Prism" (Composite WPF) project. Essentially it means that when we attempt to solve any problem, let's start with focusing on the easiest path that addresses the most common cases rather than over-complexifying the simple cases in order to handle the edge cases.

UDDI is (Not) Dead?

Over year ago Ed Gibbs asked the same question. Well it wasn't question maybe, however point is that UDDI may not be such dead yet. Some time ago I dug out that and I think it still can be useful. There are some conclusions.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

To improve impressions of mainstream software development - which, presumably, should be based upon the foundations of computer science - it comes upon the shoulders of each developer to educate him or herself with the knowledge necessary to give this discipline proper attention. Developers cannot push off this responsibility to management or "the priority setters." It is up to each of us to give software development the respect it deserves and educate those around us, accordingly.

Using Embedded Resources for HTML EMail Templates

Most web applications need to send out email for a variety of purposes, right? I like to use email as a sort of extended user interface - allowing entry points to let the user conveniently do work by getting an email and clicking on a link. I've struggled for a while with a good way of managing email templates to use in my applications. Here's a good method that simplifies the process of templating.

(Re)Assessing Best Practices

As we progress as developers, we strive to seek out the "best" way to perform our craft. The chosen methods to attain this lofty goal always bring with them a number of developmental trade-offs. Some techniques may simplify the code but lessen fine grained control while others enable greater power while introducing complexity.
