I'm never shy about my opinion - why start now? I've been reading a lot of posts flying about on whether you should learn MVC, Summing up the differences so you can decide when to use it, I even found a post that offers a scorecard approach! I remember reading the latter post thinking to myself "how can you possibly put a number next to Testability? And why it is only 2 more points than "using a RAD designer"? Isn't this missing the entire point?

I found a cool trick in a post by Remy Sharp that appends the address of a hyperlink to the end of the link's text when the page is printed. Unfortunately the trick only works in browsers that support the CSS2 pseudo selector :after. Firefox, Safari, Chrome*, Opera and now IE8 all support the selector. IE6 and IE7 don't though and that is a huge percentage of users. I came up with a way to achieve the same thing with IE6 and IE7 using jQuery and the proprietary IE events onbeforeprint and onafterprint though.

I've read a lot of posts and articles about why and when you should choose WebForms or the MVC framework to build your ASP.NET websites. They are all pretty good, but for some reason they forget or ignore the obvious third option - standard ASP.NET without the WebForm.

Before I was a geek, I was a Geologist. A Geophysicist to be precise - but mostly I just tell people I was a Geologist. I worked a lot with environmental cleanup, but I also spent a lot of time doing what's known as "Geotechnical" work - the stuff that happens before buildings are built and holes are dug. It can be kind of boring, but it's crucially important. One day I was sitting in our lab with some dark Bay Mud in a crucible, slowly adding water in measured doses and then pouring the mud through a screen and weighing out differences. I won't bore you with the details - I'll just tell you that I was 23 and cranky that this is what my career amounted to - a bunch of rigorous nonsense where I got to weigh mud.
