C# vs Ruby: A sample Side by Side Comparison

"Here is my completely non-scientific comparison of C# and Ruby. I will come up with a simple task and will attempt to implement it in both languages.
Next Generation Yahoo Messenger built with WPF and .NET

At the Consumer Electronics Show this week, Yahoo showed off some cool demos with their next generation messenger client (you can watch a video of it in action at http://messenger.yahoo.com/vista). One of the really cool things about the new messenger client is that it was built using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and the .NET Framework.

Being a responsible open source developer

I've been following the Office 2007 UI for quite some time, ever since I got my hands on early dog food alphas from the Office team. While some might not call it innovation, it just makes sense to me and I think it's a well designed and thought out piece of work. Yes, there are those that are not going to get it and require gobs of training and scream and kick and moan and want their beloved File menu and toolbar back. There is the other group where we embrace it and actually like it. I'll be the first to *** and complain when I'm building presentations where the freakin' buttons are as I'm still getting used to it, but in the end that's it. I'll get used to it, just give it time. I like the look and think it's a good way to go and frankly, Microsoft made that decision long ago and like or not, we have to adapt and live with it (or not, but that's a different blog post).

A Journey with Domain Driven Design (and NHibernate) - Part 8

We left off last time with our first association mapped and tested. Let's dig in a bit deeper with NHibernate mapping.

Today I decided to separate my inherited classes into their own mapping file. This was as easy as creating the new files and <hibernate-mapping> root elements, copying the <joined-subclass> elements over.

Is ASP.NET too difficult?

There is no doubt in my mind, that ASP.NET is the most powerful and versatile platform for web applications at the moment.
Where is .NET?

Today at Digg/programming, not one single topic involved .NET. There were a lot of PHP, Ruby and Java. So where is .NET? Why is .NET so under represented on the broader community sites? I don't think it is because PHP or Java has a bigger user base or is better or worse than .NET. It must be something else. Maybe it is because .NET developers just don't care about the other programming languages and platforms. That's fair enough, but I don't buy it.

Visual Studio vs. Vista: What's going on here?

No support for .NET 1.0 development, no support for .NET 1.1 development, and limited support for .NET 2.0 development.

So just go use VB6. It's the only support development environment for Vista.

Third Mono Beta Released

Mono 1.1.16, the third beta of version 1.2, has been released. The time span between the release of versions 1.1.15 and 1.1.16 is one of the longest in several years and the number of changes included reflects that, again System.Windows.Forms (SWF) and System.Drawing got the most attention.
