Deep Fried Bytes: Looking into the Crystal Ball about C# 4.0

One of the most exciting announcements from PDC was the news about C# 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. With all the excitement and discussion throughout the event about these new developer tools, we reached out to two experts in the fields. Charlie Calvert and Bill Wagner sat down with Keith and Woody to answer some questions and discussed their new books on LINQ and C# . We also have a short talk with Jason McConnell of the Surface team.

Stealing Someone Else's Work

"[A blogger] has clearly taken the Microdesk.Utility.UnitTest.dll and torn it open using Reflector or some other similar MSIL decompiler tool and then posted the actual source code on his blog (interestingly, after of course removing the Microdesk from the class namespace designations in the code he's posted so it looks as though its his own effort). " And the Douchebag of the Year award goes to....

How NOT To Optimize LINQ Statements

About a month ago I was experimenting with different ways to optimize my LINQ queries against the IdeaPipe database, in order to improve the read times. I wanted to improve the read times because our new Facebook Application was being launched and I anticipated an increase in our traffic to the server, which is used to host IdeaPipe and the Facebook Application component. I quickly realized how now to optimize LINQ statements though.

Dear Alt.Net Developers: Stop blaming Microsoft and WebForms for crea

I am responsible for every website I create. If I create a site or application that is unmaintainable or that has poorly formed HTML or doesn't render well in all browsers, that is my fault. I chose my development tools/framework, or my employer, who I choose to work for, chose the development tools/framework. Either way, it is my responsibility, as a professional, to do my utmost to create the best possible application that is within my capability to create.

Skinning the Cat with Fluent NHibernate

As you may have noticed, I have become interested in the concept of Object Relational Mapping and the NHibernate framework. One of the more painful/tedious aspects of using NHibernate is hand writing the xml mapping files. That is why I got excited when I heard that Jeremy Miller was open sourcing his mapping generation libraries.

Encrypting Configuration Information in ASP.NET 2.0 Applications

When creating ASP.NET 2.0 applications, developers commonly store sensitive configuration information in the Web.config file. The cannonical example is database connection strings, but other sensitive information included in the Web.config file can include SMTP server connection information and user credentials, among others. While ASP.NET is configured, by default, to reject all HTTP requests to resources with the .config extension, the sensitive information in Web.config can be compromised if a hacker obtains access to your web server's file system. For example, perhaps you forgot to disallow anonymous FTP access to your website, thereby allowing a hacker to simply FTP in and download your Web.config file. Eep.

Fortunately ASP.NET 2.0 helps mitigate this problem by allowing selective portions of the Web.config file to be encrypted, such as the <connectionStrings> section, or some custom config section used by your application. Configuration sections can be easily encrypted using code or aspnet_regiis.exe, a command-line program. Once encrypted, the Web.config settings are safe from prying eyes. Furthermore, when retrieving encrypted congifuration settings programmatically in your ASP.NET pages, ASP.NET will automatically decrypt the encrypted sections its reading. In short, once the configuration information in encrypted, you don't need to write any further code or take any further action to use that encrypted data in your application.
