What Gives? Microsofts Code Generation Tool

In a world of Microsoft and third party applications, out comes t4. t4 is a code generation tool that can compete with CodeSmith, but its FREE and built right into Visual Studio. It has been years since the first edition with very little publication of the actual application. t4 is a free code generation engine from Microsoft that underpins the Domain Specific Languages and Software Factory toolkits.

Writing Tests to Catch Memory Leaks in .NET

Although Microsoft will claim that it is "not possible to have a memory leak in managed code", most seasoned .NET developers will laugh at that statement. It turns out that it is very easy to leak memory -- just keep a referencing object around longer than the referenced object, and you can leak.

Here is a way to write tests to catch leaks.

BR element sucks!

You know how it goes. Designer creates the design templates or whatever and then developers have their say. Sometimes, it happens that they mess up something. Among many design issues caused by developers, one in particular really drives me me nuts - incorrect usage of <br/> element. I often find that <br/> element is being used to create layout. And this is simply - incorrect.

How to Use Visual Studio jQuery IntelliSense Supported Through Hotfix

Jeff King, Program Manager for Visual Studio Web Tools blogged VS2008 SP1 Hotfix to Support "-vsdoc.js" IntelliSense Doc Files on Friday. The HotFix (VS2008 SP1 only) allows Visual Studio to find "-vsdoc.js" files that have commenting for IntelliSense in the same folder as a script file linked to from your document. In this post I am going to show you how to get IntelliSense working once the HotFix is installed in both a normal aspx page as well as ASP.NET MasterPage.

Cross page posting ,submit form and Server.Transfer methods in asp.net

4. Cross page posting in ASP.NET

To transer data using cross page posting
we need to use FindControl Method
we can write code like this

6. Server.Transfer Method in ASP.NET

Server.Transfer method sends (transfers) all the state information
all application/session variables and all items in the request collections)
created in one ASPX page to a second ASPX page.

you can't use Server.Transfer to send the user to an external site
The Server.Transfer method also has a second parameter-"preserveForm". If you set this to True, using a statement such as Server.Transfer("WebForm2.aspx", True), the existing query string and any form variables will still be available to the page you are transferring to.

For example, if your Default.aspx has a TextBox control called TextBox1 and you transferred to Default2.aspx with the preserveForm parameter set to True, you'd be able to retrieve the value of the original page TextBox control by referencing Request.Form("TextBox1").

ASP.NET Routing + just enough rope...

If you've played with the new ASP.NET routing stuff with WebForms, you probably encountered some issues with relative paths to static content (css, Javascript files etc). This is a common issue across browsers because of the way they resolve relative paths.

This post shows a simple example and a couple ways to resolve it...

In this sixth and final entry on a series of post focused on using jQuery with no prior knowledge, I dive into applying jQuery into the traditional ASP.Net web form environment. The example code covered in this entry focuses on applying the jQuery Validation plug-in against 2 sets of input in the same form. To make the example more realistic, the form fields are contained inside of content page to ensure the code works with ASP.Net's client id renaming feature/annoyance.

Create a file tree explorer with the jQuery File tree plugin and asp.net. With this plugin and a little server side logic, it is very easy to create a great looking client side file tree explorer. This article explains how to set up, configure and customize jQuery File Tree and use ASP.NET to retrieve the file structure.

Best of the web - my pick for October 2008

There were a lot of high quality articles dawned in my Google Reader last month. Chris Spooner (Blog.SpoonGraphics) posted two awesome tutorials on how to create a modern blog design. Angie and Robert Bowen (Arbenitng) launched Social Media Directory for Designers. Dave Ward (Encosia) shared & of his favorite jQuery plugins for use with ASAP.NET. I published Handycons, free hand-drawn social media icon set, and I'm working on Handycons II.

Is Code Coverage Really All That Useful?

Test driven development proponents often tend to push code coverage as a useful metric for gauging how well tested an application is. 100% code coverage has long been the ultimate goal of testing fanatics. But is code coverage really all that useful? If I told you that my application has 100% code coverage, should that mean anything to you?

You should never use flags for language choice

Flag icons are pretty (especially fam-fam-fam icon set). But flag represents a country, not a language. Isn't it obvious? No, it's obviously not! While I surfed the web yesterday I found several websites that use flags for language choice. Here are a few reasons why you'll never want to do that.
