Visual Studio Shell 2008: Bringing More .NET Languages into the Fold

Visual Studio Shell was released in January of 2007 without much fanfare. Even though it's free to download, at the time it was not very useful for most developers as few packages had yet been written for it. Now eight months have gone by and quite a few projects are sporting free Visual Studio interfaces. In this article I discuss Visual Studio Shell itself as well as several of the languages which are currently developing shells.

Lutz Roeder's Weblog: The Future of .NET Reflector

After more than eight years of working on .NET Reflector, I have decided it is time to move on and explore some new opportunities. I have reached an agreement to have Red Gate Software continue the development of .NET Reflector. Red Gate has a lot of experience creating tools for both .NET and SQL Server. They have the resources necessary to work on new features, and Reflector fits nicely with other .NET tools the company offers. Red Gate will continue to provide the free community version and is looking for your feedback and ideas for future versions.

7 principles of clean and optimized CSS code

With the popularity of CSS layouts and JavaScript-enriched web page experiences, it's not uncommon, particularly for large sites, for the CSS files alone to grow in size, but there are some principles to consider during and after you write your CSS to help keep it tight and optimized. Optimization isn't just minimizing file size - it's also about being organized, clutter-free, and efficient. You'll find that the more knowledge you have about optimal CSS practices, smaller file size will inevitably come as an direct result of their implementation. You may already be familiar with some of the principles mentioned in this article, but they are worth a review.
13 features I'd like to see in BlogEngine.NET

As you probably know by now I use BlogEngine.NET as my blogging platform. In order to become more powerful engine I suggest thirteen (more or less) common features, like ability to unsubscribe from comment notifications, group comments&trackbacks and much more.

This article explains how to transfer values between the Parent page and a Pop-up window. The code has been tested against IE7 and Firefox.

Visual Studio Theme Generator

A fun little ASP.NET MVC Application I wrote to generate Visual Studio themes based off of 3 given colors. I have always felt that selecting every color to make a decent theme is way too repetitive. This web application automatically chooses complements / contrasts based off your initial color selections (and uses jQuery to let you preview your theme before creating). Check it out and let me know what you think.

Reduce ASP.NET Page size and complexity using JQuery-Part 2

This is part 2 of my series for ASP.NET AJAX and JQuery comparison. You can read part 1 here. In my last 2 articles (Dynamically create ASP.NET user control using ASP.NET Ajax and Web Service and Dynamically create ASP.NET user control using JQuery and JSON enabled Ajax Web Service), I explained how to access JSON data from ASP.NET AJAX script service using ASP.NET AJAX client side framework and JQuery. In this post I will compare response/ request for these two implementations.
