Lutz Roeder's Weblog: The Future of .NET Reflector

After more than eight years of working on .NET Reflector, I have decided it is time to move on and explore some new opportunities. I have reached an agreement to have Red Gate Software continue the development of .NET Reflector. Red Gate has a lot of experience creating tools for both .NET and SQL Server. They have the resources necessary to work on new features, and Reflector fits nicely with other .NET tools the company offers. Red Gate will continue to provide the free community version and is looking for your feedback and ideas for future versions.

To get JavaScript IntelliSense working in VS 2008 SP1, you need to tell IntelliSense the location of the libraries that you're using.
UML lost the programmers. There is no doubt about it. in my mind. And when a software design technology loses the programmers it fades away no matter what the academia thinks.
Dynamically create ASP.NET user control using Ajax and Web Service

To make web UI dynamic and more responsive to the various situations and modes, several techniques are used by the developers like making irrelevant controls invisible, disabling unused controls. This technique makes you page complex and heavy in size. Dynamic user control is another story. With dynamic control creation you will get the unmatched flexibility and innovation with robustness. Using this technique you can add any usercontrol to any page as per demand without postback or update panel.

C#: Enhance Enums using Extension Methods

Extension Methods are one of the coolest features that have been added in .NET 3.5. I've heard arguments that there is no reason to use them, and the only reason Microsoft added them is to enable the ability to buid LINQ. Well, I do not entirely agree with that statement; in fact, I have found a cool way to use Extension Methods to enhance the System.Enum object since it cannot be inherited. Even though Enum can not be inherited, it can be extended using Extension Methods. Here's the code to an Extension Method that extends the LocalizationMarket Enum with the ToDescriptionString() method that returns the DescriptionAttributes value for the given enum value.

Web developers. You suck.

Well, JavaScript developers, specifically. In order to aid in development of my own websites, I enabled JavaScript debugging in Internet Explorer a few weeks back. To my horror, I have quickly experienced what seems to be complete disregard for serving syntactically correct JavaScript on the open internet. No, I'm not just talking about a few niche websites, run by amateur programmers. I am talking about industry-leading nerd-friendly powerhouse websites that should know better.

Though .NET apps scale well thanks to caching, you can always use Memcached to scale further.
