Scale Cheaply - Sharding

There are a lot of expensive ways to scale your database - all of which are highly touted by the big three database vendors because, well, they want to sell you all types of really expensive stuff. Despite what an "engagement consultant" might tell you though, most of the high-traffic websites on the web (google, digg, facebook) rely on far cheaper and better strategies: the core of which is called sharding.

Create In-line Data Editing with the ASP.NET 3.5 ListView Control

I am lovin' the total control the ListView control is giving me. This past week a link to Telerik's new RadGrid control was floating around the office - and the general consensus was that the in-line editing capabilities control was pretty cool. And I completely agree - the in-line edit feature is pretty useful. But ... you don't need to buy the RadGrid to create a grid like this. ASP.NET 3.5's ListView control provides excellent out of the box support for scenarios like this.

11 Top Tips for a Successful Technical Presentation

Over five years ago I posted Tips for a Successful MSFT Presentation. Yesterday I watched the video of my Mix Presentation all the way through. It's always very painful to hear one's own voice but it's even worse to watch yourself. I never listen to my podcast and I avoid watching myself. It's like watching a person in parallel universe and it inspires self-loathing. However, if you are someone who values continuous improvement - and I am - you need to do the uncomfortable.

Using a Windows Service just to run a scheduled process is Wrong!

A classic post by Jon Galloway: A Windows Service is the wrong solution to scheduling one-off custom processes. The right solution for scheduling simple processes is the Windows Task Scheduler.

Rick Strahl has a great post questioning how much fraud Google actually lets through with AdSense.
