How to run a software development company (INTO THE GROUND)

The series will cover the things you *shouldn't* do if you hold some sort of managerial stake in a software project. Sadly these tales will be from my own personal experience working for companies that have drifted into disarray. These examples will be embellished somewhat to drive the points home, but by and large, everything you will read in these posts will be true.

Move ASP.Net ViewState to SQL Server

ViewState is a great feature, but it can get really bloated with data, especially if you have loads of controls on a page, repeaters etc.

You could think about setting enable viewstate to false, but you'll need it for posting pages back.

This tutorial moves the viewstate to a SQL database, by implementing a simple class that all your pages will inherit from.

As you might remember, I have submitted a post about Codeplex a few weeks ago; Microsoft Open Source Projects.
Efficient data paging with SQL Server 2005 using ROW_NUMBER()

Paging large amounts of data in SQL Server 2000 used to be a real pain, creating temporary tables, suffering bad performance after the first few batches of data or using ROWCOUNT to ignore large numbers of rows. Luckily SQL Server 2005 delivers a couple of new functions to make efficient painless data paging a reality.

Why UI design first is important

"Like most developers, I work with other developers. Most are computer sciency and kick ass when it comes to class design and architecture. The problem with this is that this creates a UI design culture that is not always optimal.

There will always be bigger picture architectural design decisions that need to be made. So much of what we write code for doesn't even involve UI, especially since big systems are distributed and service-oriented. But when someone comes to you with something from a competitor site, and says, "I want to do this," starting somewhere deep in the application is the wrong place to go."
