WCF Services - Let's Get Started

In connection with testing WCF services I had to get the services to work under IIS on my development computer. The default WCF services library created by Visual Studio does not automatically include IIS support. There were other small glitches that I was able to overcome nicely, in spite of everything.

Windows Workflow Foundation 4.0

Windows WorkFlow Foundation 4.0 has some new cool things to offer. I visited one of David Chappell sessions where he told us about "Dublin", "Oslo" and WF 4.0. It was very interesting session and I got all information I expected.

Visual Studio 2010: Brief view at debug history

Visual Studio 2010 introduces also some new debugging features. One of them is debug history. Debug history enables you to track all the points on track of control flow and it also monitors activities that you cannot see otherwise. It makes debugging of hard to find problems much easier, I think. Of course, there are many other new and cool debugging features available.

The Data Model Resource Book - Universal Data Models

Couple of years ago I brought two books for my company. Today I can say that I made a small investment that still works pretty well. These books are titled as The Data Model Reosurce Book and author of these books is Len Silverston. First volume of Data Model Resource Book introduces common models that are used by almost all industries. Second volume offers us industry specific models.

Displaying Twitter Updates in a Page by Page fashion with ASP.NET

In this tutorial, we will develop a technique to retrieve and display a page full of Twitter updates to the user, giving him the ability to move to the next page. The user will be able to browse all the pages using 'Previous Page&apos and &aposNext Page&apos links. Our technique will be highly efficient as we will be retrieving only enough number of Twitter updates from a given screen name, to display on a single page. Only when the user browses to the next page will another set of Twitter updates be retrieved. At the same time we will cache the results, page by page, giving seamless and smooth performance to the end user.

Adventures in MVVM -- Ball of Mud vs MVVM

A demo that I added to my MVVM talk is one that compares a "Ball of Mud" application with a componentized MVVM application with the exact same set of features. I do this to contrast a messy, un-testable work of code to a cleanly separated, testable work. The application I chose to write is a Twitter search application in WPF. When you download the code, you will see two folders: "BallOfMud" and "MVVM".

Getting Started With Selenium For ASP.NET Developers

During the Olympia Software Craftsmanship Workshop last weekend, Jeff Olsen (@olsonjeffery) demonstrated the use of the web testing framework Selenium. I was really impressed with the Selenium IDE and how easy it was to use in Firefox. One of the menu items of the IDE is to export a test as C#. I wanted to find out exactly what it takes for a .NET developer to get started using Selenium. This post is intended to help others get started.

MVC support in existing ASP.NET control suites

One of the problems with embracing MVC is that the toolsets we may have used in our standard ASP.NET web forms projects may now not work in a new MVC project.

However, do not fear! some of the big guns in the control suite market already have MVC support, so you may not need to re-invest in new MVC versions of the same suites or have to start re-inventing the wheel building MVC controls yourself.

NHibernate - query only properties

With most applications, there is some difference between the domain model and the data model. Probably the most common scenario that I run into can be expressed in the usually Blog & Posts example. In our domain model, we don't want to have a Blog.Posts collection, we want to only have a Post.Blog.

Opinionated Input Builders for ASP.Net MVC using partials

The goal of these control helpers is to reward you for developing MVC with the Model first. Yeah there is a reason that Model View Controller starts with the Model. Using the strongly typed views in the aspx view engine we can carry the type down to the control helpers with intellisense and then build html input control based on conventions for rendering specific CLR types to specific HTML output.

I have included some that may make their way into the Visual Studio 2010 release.

Rob is adding a very nice simple repository to SubSonic 3.0 that will give SubSonic top-notch POCO support and very slick migrations. Mapping files be damned!

Permanently Redirecting a Page in ASP.NET 4.0

Web applications commonly move the pages and content around the servers. This results to accumulation of old links in search engines.

Traditionally this was handled in ASP.NET using the Response.Redirect method to forward the request to the new URL. However Redirect method issues an HTTP 302 found (temporary redirect) response. Redirect method results in extra round trip when user accessing the old URLs.

How to localize Silverlight Applications the smart way

A very common task when developing business applications is to localize them for english, german and other languages. The most common approach is to use ResX files in order to create resource classes which can be used to bind the silverlight controls to. Due to a bug in the resource generator from Microsoft, you always have to change the created resource class from internal to public, which is very annoying . That's why I was searching for a better solution to localize silverlight applications - and I think I found a really smart way to do that task.

Validation in a MS MVC application, revisited

A while ago I posted a approach to validating you´r model and one to add captcha validation in a MS MVC application. You can find those posts here: Mvc, validate controller action input and Asp.net mvc captcha validation made easy. They both use a attribute approach to declare what to validate and how. I then find the attributes in a base controller and validate, then I put any error in the modelstate of the controller. Later, after thinking a little bit about this, I figured that I might just as well use action filters. Then I will not have to inherit from my BaseController everywhere I want to use this approach. So I sat down and rebuild it.
