Use a base class for all your SubSonic controllers and have automatically SQL paging, SQL sorting and filtering of your data through a search criteria. All this decoupled from your aspx or your controls in a nice controller class.

A few long months ago I announced my intention to fully open source the DotNetKicks.com codebase. Due to recent work commitments this process has taken much longer that I had wished; the good news now is that it is very close to an initial beta release.

Great post at CodingHorror about the horrors that can befall you as an Administrator. All children, older people, and everybody who isn't paid to be an administrator should be members of the Users group. Why aren't you?

Why Microsoft can't ship open source code

I've suggested a few times that Microsoft could go beyond just cooperating with the open source community and actually ship open source code. For instance, Paint.NET is a great alternative to MS Paint, so not just bundle it? Tonight I had a very long conversation with someone who is in a position to really understand both Microsoft and open source. Now I understand why my suggestion - though well intentioned - was hopelessly naive.

Free IIS7 Beta 3 Web Hosting

If you haven't heard the news yet, there are already several Web hosters running Longhorn Server Beta 3 and offering free IIS7 web sites! As part of our ramp-up to Beta 3, we engaged some really terrific hosters who were willing to spend many long days (and nights) working with us under a very tight schedule to validate that Beta 3 was ready for release. They've already given us invaluable feedback and have now deployed Beta 3 live on the internet under the GoLive license.
