west-wind.com — FireFox 3.0 apparently is much more aggressive in caching content than previous versions of FireFox. While this is good for performance in many situations I've noticed that this is seriously becoming a problem in some of my applications where support files like scripts and CSS files get updated in applications and FireFox doesn't recognize those changes. Looks like last-modified headers are not respected by FF3. read more...

blog.vuscode.com — "I believe that the most important reason why NHibernate is not more widely adopted by general DEV population is exactly the “Java XML configuration” PIA feeling you have while working with it. Great news for all of us from that group: NHibernate is possible to be used WITHOUT configuration files! " read more...

dotnetslackers.com — It’s been quite a while since Microsoft has introduced the Beta 2 release of Silverlight. There are plenty of Silverlight enthusiasts who are passionate about this cross-platform browser application programming. They’ve already given us some useful and eye catching applications. Some applications have given us the feel that this is the future of web programming. I’m a great follower of WPF. In fact I’ve always been and will be. Silverlight has many things in common with WPF but also many different things missing, being a subset of WPF. For the last couple of days I was thinking about creating some eye-catching, innovative user interface but something common, something people have already seen. The idea was converting an existing user interface which was written using another platform, and of course using WPF. read more...

kohari.org — A rather heated discussion erupted last week on Twitter and IRC concerning so-called “drag-and-drop demos” — point-and-click demonstrations of “software development” that just involve dragging controls around on a graphical designer without a lot of actual coding involved. Being entirely unable to resist joining in on debates, I had to chime in and give my two cents. read more...

mindscape.co.nz — The Visual Studio File Explorer Add-in (sexy name we know, but hey, it’s self documenting) is a free Tool Window add-in for VS 2008 that provides a Windows Explorer style file system view. It’s particularly useful for performing routine file system tasks without the need to “context switch” away from Visual Studio, which can be time-consuming over the course of days and weeks. It is shell-enabled so extensions like TortoiseSVN work too. read more...

blogs.msdn.com — I promised an update on SQL Express availability in my last post about the release of SQL Server 2008 so here it is. SQL Server 2008 Express is now available along with the release of the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, which is a prerequisite and Visual Studio Express SP1. As I mentioned, there are two more editions of SQL Express on the way. There are a number of prerequisites for SQL Server 2008 that you will have to install on your own before installing SQL Express. Here is the list and basic instructions: read more...
