C++ Functions Part II

Until now, in all the functions we have seen, the arguments passed to the functions have been passed by value. This means that when calling a function with parameters, what we have passed to the function were copies of their values but never the variables themselves. For example, suppose that we called our first function addition using the following code:

A Ruby HTTP Daemon That's Faster Than Mongrel

Thin is a new web server which has been written by Marc-André Cournoyer that uses the EventMachine, Rack and Mongrel libraries. EventMachine makes it super fast at processing network I/O, Rack makes it easy to integrate with existing Ruby Web app frameworks, and Mongrel helps it parse HTTP.

Jeffrey Palermo has announced a call for participation in the open source "code camp" server project.

Adding CSS Colors to Visual Studio 2005

One of my biggest pet peeves about Visual Studio, is that it displays a lot of HTML formatting errors as errors, instead of warnings, and one of the most common HTML errors that Visual Studio 2005 likes to display is the invalid color values, such as "AliceBlue", "Bisque", "CornflowerBlue", "Chartreuse" and "Linen" to name a few.
Here's a quick and dirty way to solve this problem.

Is DHTML Dead?

September 1997 saw the release of Microsoft's Internet ExplorerT 4, an event which not only changed the face of web development but officially marked the start of the infamous 'Browser Wars'.

Shipped with every version of Microsoft WindowsT (beginning with the final beta release of Windows 98), Internet Explorer soon became by far the most popular browser on the web.
Version 4 saw the introduction of Dynamic Hyper Text Markup Language (DHTML) support, combining aspects of scripting with Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) technology and thus allowing web developers the option of bringing far greater interactivity to their previously static HTML documents.

Introducing the Visual Designers

Meet the Visual Studio 2005 designers-Application Designer, Class Designer, Deployment Designer, Logical Datacenter Designer, and System Designer. Excerpt: First to set the scene: The Object Management Group (OMG) has a licensed brand called Model-Driven Architecture (MDA). MDA is an approach to MDD based on constructing platform-independent UML models (PIMs) supplemented with one or more platform-specific models (PSMs). Microsoft also has an approach to model-driven development, based not on the generic UML but on a set of tightly focused domain-specific languages (DSLs). This approach to model-driven development is part of a Microsoft initiative called Software Factories, which in turn is part of a wider Dynamic Systems Initiative.

Speed up web services using the SoapDocumentMethod attribute

The power of using web services as a means to create large connected systems are enormous but sometimes it can be a performance bottleneck. Here's a simple way of speeding it up.

Systems Integration: No Assumptions

There are many sayings about assumptions and I'll let you fill in your favorite. Regarding Systems Integration, the hard lesson I've learned is not to assume the other system will properly filter or handle a specific constraint. For example, Windows systems use a carriage-return-line-feed to mark the end-of-a-line. However, UNIX systems simply use a line-feed to mark the end-of-a-line. This is not to say that UNIX systems can't handle files containing CRLF's. It just means that most UNIX Systems just use an LF to mark the end-of-a-line.
