ASP.NET MVC Request Flow

I looked all over the net for a good diagram that outlined the major classes involved an ASP.NET MVC request. I couldn't find one, and so I created this one. If you want to get a very high level overview, then check it out.

Microsoft is going to make jQuery part of the official dev platform. JQuery will come with Visual Studio in the long term, and in the short term it'll ship with ASP.NET MVC.
ScottGu announce that Microsoft will be shipping jQuery with Visual Studio going forward. We will distribute the jQuery JavaScript library as-is, and will not be forking or changing the source from the main jQuery branch. The files will continue to use and ship under the existing jQuery MIT license.

Convenience Kills, or the Case Against RAD Tools

A rather heated discussion erupted last week on Twitter and IRC concerning so-called "drag-and-drop demos" - point-and-click demonstrations of "software development" that just involve dragging controls around on a graphical designer without a lot of actual coding involved. Being entirely unable to resist joining in on debates, I had to chime in and give my two cents.

Is Managed Code Slower Than Unmanaged Code?

Ask anyone the question above and they will say that managed is slower than unmanaged code. Are they right? No they are not. The problem is that when most people think of .NET they think of other frameworks with a runtime, like Java or Visual Basic; or they may even think about interpreters. They do not think about applications, or what they do; they do not think about limiting factors like network or disk access; in short, they do not think.

Implementing Interfaces: ICloneable and IComparable

A friend of mine was showing me about some common interfaces and some good use cases for them the other day. A discussion arose of how to accurately create a deep copy of an object and the best way to go about it. Shortly after that discussion we got into the Sort() method and how to dictate how that method will sort your objects. This is when he spilled into telling me all about these common interfaces.

Heck, I'm learning a ton from his blog.

Boost ASP.NET performance with deferred content loading

A comprehensive example of how to improve the perceived speed of your pages, by implementing user controls to encapsulate secondary content and then deferring them until primary content is displayed.

Linq to SQL DataContext Lifetime Management

The DataContext is the central object that holds LINQ to SQL together. This post talks about a few different approaches you can use to hang on to your DataContext in the course of a request, to pass between layers or to manage on a per thread/request level.

Calculate Distance Between Geocodes in C# and JavaScript

There are times when I need code to calculate the distance between two geocodes (Lat/Long points). I don't need it very often and until now I didn't have a code snippet that I could jus copy and paste. I was searching and found Rob Conery's LINQ and Geocoding post. It's an interesting post and he includes a sample of how to use Lambda expressions in C# 3.0 to calculate the distance between two geocodes in Miles. I decided to copy his code snippet and make sure it works in .NET 2.0 and also convert it to JavaScript.

Scott Hanselman shows off the new web deployment tool from Microsoft. Looks like it has a lot of potential and there will be some Powershell integration later on.
