DotNetKicks to be Open Sourced

As the community on DotNetKicks.com has grown in size over the past year, I have received received many offers of help with adding features and many requests for the source code. Due to other top secret commitments, I have recently not had as much time as I would have liked to continue the development of DotNetKicks.com. A discussion on DotNetKicks last week re-highlighted the issue of feature stagnation (the community is continuing to grow just fine).

We are in the business of solving problems, and the best solution here is to open source the project. I had planned to release some code this past weekend, but some of the current dependencies include code that I don't wish to release. I am currently refactoring the dependencies, and I will be able to release some code very soon.

Please shout it from the roof tops, we need all the contributers we can get.

Wrap Your Name Value Variables

ASP.NET gives a developer a lot of loosely typed key-value collections in which to stash stash variables, depending upon persistence needs. The short list includes ViewState, Session, Application and HttpContext.Items. These collections can come in very handy when one needs to keep an object around outside of a single request or shuttle things between different bits of the http pipeline. But it comes at a price-these collections are loosely typed, just returning Objects. Moreover, there is no compile-time checking to ensure that you are requesting the right key in the right place. Errors can lead to crashes at best, and interesting data corruption at worst. Here is a handy technique to avoid such issues.

Cheat Sheet: ASP.NET Page Life Cycle & Common Events

We've all seen Leon Andrianarivony's excellent ASP.NET Page Life Cycle diagram. This one-page cheat sheet is the perfect compliment to that diagram, providing descriptions for each of the common stages and events.

Paging Implementation With SQL

When you see how the paging is a piece of cake now in .NET server controls (fro example, GridView), you can imagine how much amount of work was needed to do paging if you haven't these server controls. You can for example fetch all thr data block and put them on the session and just do your paging in you business layer! Ok..I heared someone say what are saying. Ture. This is really a miss when you working on huge data blocks. So, the best way is to do you paging inside the datalayer...

Inside MySpace

Read the story of the MySpace and how it has grown from "only" few hundred thousands of users to over one hundred million. In the middle they switched from ColdFusion to ASP.NET. The scalability issues with web servers and databases are interesting to read.

Being a responsible open source developer

I've been following the Office 2007 UI for quite some time, ever since I got my hands on early dog food alphas from the Office team. While some might not call it innovation, it just makes sense to me and I think it's a well designed and thought out piece of work. Yes, there are those that are not going to get it and require gobs of training and scream and kick and moan and want their beloved File menu and toolbar back. There is the other group where we embrace it and actually like it. I'll be the first to *** and complain when I'm building presentations where the freakin' buttons are as I'm still getting used to it, but in the end that's it. I'll get used to it, just give it time. I like the look and think it's a good way to go and frankly, Microsoft made that decision long ago and like or not, we have to adapt and live with it (or not, but that's a different blog post).
