Ok, really stupid question. When my area says, "register soon" and provides no link, does that mean that it's just not available for registration, or does it mean that I missed my opportunity? I'm fairly certain that it means that it's just not available (yet), but I don't want to miss out on the event because of a misunderstanding.

It means the event is not ready for registration yet. Check back often to make sure you get in.
