mikeinmadison.wordpress.com — VisualSVN is simply a front-end for the command line Subversion functions, just like TortoiseSVN. The difference between the two is that TortoiseSVN is a “add-in” for Windows and VisualSVN is an add-in for Visual Studio.

Is it better than Ankh?

It may be better ant it may be worse. Ankh is free, while VisualSVN is about $50. Ankh probably has more features and options, but in my opinion VisualSVN is easier to use. Also, because VisaulSVN actualy uses TortoiseSVN there is less overhead in using it if you are going to have TortoiseSVN on your system anyway. I think one of the best features of VisualSVN is the support it has for importing and getting entire solutions. If you set things up exactly as in this article, using web site projects among team members is really easy. I'm not entirely sure if Ankh supports this or not.

I've used Ankh with web application projects over the last 6 months. It does everything I need, but it crashes occasionally. I don't think Ankh supports importing or getting entire solutions. I've always checked out with TortoiseSVN and then the first time I open the solution Ankh asks me if it should take over.

If VisualSVN is more stable than Ankh I may consider purchasing it. I didn't realize they had a free trial, so I'll have to give it a try.

Also, the VisualSVN Server is awesome. It's a one click (almost) windows installer for Subversion server. It even includes an http svn explorer.

I have been using VisualSVN for almost a year now and it has been great. It is a major time saver. One feature I noticed that was just amazing was that it tracks file renaming and moving as SVN changes so that when you commit the changes it is all tracked with history on the server. That is very useful when refactoring your projects. I set up my SVN server before there was a VisualSVN server but I soon hope to upgrade.
