blogs.aspcode.net — I am on the hunt for an alternative for upgrading to VS 2008 Pro. I am sick of the bloated files and bests taklng ages to download, install and load. This is part two, an update of the progress.

Holy crap, some people just need a reason to complain.

For me, personally, everything is bloated. I just code XAML in notepad and run CSC. And my source control is my dot matrix printer, a binder, and my bookcases. No need for a whole other application running to manage source.

And it seems some people just need a reason for making light of other peoples problems and realities.
yesthatmcgurk, for me it's not any reason. It's THE reason. We all live in different realitys, yours isn't the only one, and in my reality I do have a big problem with what I described. I live in VS. During a typical day I'd say I work with between 15 and 30 different solutions, depending which clients bugs me that day...And some of my solutions are somewhat massive, containing 10-15 or so projects totalling hundreds of files. If that takes minutes to load then I feel I do have a problem.

But you are right in one point: I am complaining. Of course I am. VS is my most important work tool. And my point is these slow load times etc reminds me how VB 6 performed almost 10 years ago in a large project I did for an insurance company. Now is now and in my eyes MS is taking VS in the wrong direction.

Code XAML in notepad and run CSC is certainly on the complete other side of the scale and I am simply trying to find something in between.

Slow load times??? I'm running a standard, boring core 2 duo with 3 gigs of memory and a 7200rpm single hard drive, and I can load an average project in vs2k8 within ten seconds. My current project's solution (and I'm just talking about the core solution; its currently one of three in an overall system) contains FORTY EIGHT individual projects, each one has a minimum of five files. It loads in 11 seconds.

tl;dr: You're doing it wrong.

maybe youre right about vs2008. I'm talking about vs2005. And all I can say that it's a fact for me - and loading the same project in sharpdevelop takes seconds. And now in VS2008 Express it also is ok, slightly slower but ok. *Maybe* it might be ok in VS2008 Pro, but I don't feel like testing...I am happy as it is now with Express, that's my whole point.
