I believe its similar to creating a wildcard mapping. Only, instead of mapping a wildcard, you just map .doc files.

However, with IIS7 it should be possible to secure _all_ the files/folders with Forms Authentication.

that's freaky. Its probably because you're securing it in ASP.NET, but when they link directly IIS bypasses ASP.NET and sends the file. I see there are three options:
1) change the rights on the DOC files so that ONLY the ASP.NET worker process can read those files
2) Configure IIS to block that file type (similar to how IIS won't send .cs/.config/etc files)
3) Move those docs out of the virtual directory structure and load/send them via ASP.NET

Had a customer report that even while the folder was protected visitors could still link directly to and D/L DOC files in that protected folder.

You should see the angry emails I get from some people after they have been banned.

It seems that many people think that .NET means the Internet because they seem upset when they are banned for posting pictures of their cat. One guy demanded that I reinstate his account and offer a full apology.
